User Datagram Protocol characteristic

is connectionless, best-effort protocol, does not privde: reliability, ordering congestion or flow control

Transmission Control Protocol properties

reliable, in-order delivery of bytes, full-duplex protocol (flows can go in both directions), flow-control mechanism, supports demultiplexing

Congestion Control Mechanism

prevent too much data from host to be injected into the network

Flow control

Prevents sender from over-running the capacity of receiver, receiver can limit received data size

Segment format

packets exchanged between TCP peers carries a segment of the byte stream

Three-way handshake algorithm

used by TCP to establish and terminate a connection between processes

Remote Procedure Call

general mechanism for structuring distributed systems, application program makes a call into a procedure without regard for whether it is local or remote and blocks until the call returns

used for the exchange of multimedia data, typically runs over UDP, does not guarantee delivery of message
